it is not uncommon for a person to develop a defense mechanism for shear survival, when captive (and beaten, as if being captive wasn't torture enough) for a long period of time. one such defense mechanism is the projection of a hyper-cordiality toward the oppressors. ("learn to love the rope" for '70's movie fans, Rolling Thunder) such psuedo-affection helps to diminish the intensity of the hatred and channel it towards something productive. (in such a case, survival, mentally and physically)

i strongly suspect that when John McCain uses the phrase "My Friends", he is continuing to employ that defense mechanism of anger management learned long ago as a P.O.W. and given the intelligence level of public officials, the corporate media, and hence the american electorate today...

who could really blame him?
